A RECOVERED PIECE OF HISTORY
By: Jessa Tanner
In present day we tend to rely on others discoveries and achievements from the past. This leads us to wonder what we may be missing and what has not been quite uncovered from our world. Only ten metres below the streets of Saint Leonard, Montreal, a pair of non-professional explorers had found a warren of ice age caverns that date back to 15,000 years ago. Although these caverns are as big as they are, those who had discovered them had used both drills and hammers to make their way through the prehistoric walls of the underground chamber. These trenches have said to be made out of limestone measuring to about 6 metres in height, never discovered until present day. These walls have been hypothesized to be “formed thousands of years ago during the last ice age when the pressure of massive glaciers split the rock beneath the surface.” as said by The Globe And Mail News. This far in the discovery between 250 - 500 metres have been investigated. Many of these requiring equipment to rock climb the limestone walls, as well as crawling through tight spaces of rock. As these explorers continue their search many wonder how they have missed this until now, and if there are more discoveries to be made relating to this discovery.

SPORTS UPDATES
WRESTLING AT BCHS
by Calder Morris
For the first time in decades, Brooks Composite High School has a Buffalos Wrestling team. The team is made of up of athletes with varying levels of experience in the sport. Some members possess previous competition wrestling experience, a few are coming from backgrounds in MMA, and some are brand new to the sport. All team members are very excited to be part of this group and are training hard in preparation for their upcoming meets.
The wrestling team competed in Calgary at the Forest Lawn "Clash with the Titans" Tournament. Teams from 36 schools from all over Alberta competed in a novice tournament on Friday night and a senior tournament on Saturday. The BCHS team did very well in their first tournament and represented our school with great sportsmanship, several match wins, and four medal winning finishes in their respective categories. Congratulations to Gold Medalist Matthew Peterson, Silver Medalist Derek Bayrack, Silver Medalist Tyler Turner, and Bronze Medalist Hunter Yagos-Hofstetter. The next tournament for the team is on Saturday, January 6 at Medicine Hat High School. On January 6, the team will head to Medicine Hat High School to compete in the “Hawks Classic” tournament. Wrestling differs from other high school sports in that wrestlers are separated into competition categories based on their weights rather than their age or grade level in school. This method of categorization is in place to allow a fair competition to wrestlers of differing sizes.
The head coach of the Buffalos Wrestling team is Mrs. Stephanie McKinney, who is currently on maternity leave from her teaching position at Brooks Composite. McKinney, and her husband, Darcy McKinney; a teacher and wrestling coach in Duchess, are both successful, experienced wrestlers who have competed at the highest levels of competition in Canada. With very strong coaching and a dedicated hard-working group of student athletes, the Brooks Composite High School Wrestling team is off to a great start in its inaugural year in ASAA competition.

SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM HAS GREAT SHOWING AT FIRST TOURNAMENT
By:Rebecca Nielsen On December 1st and 2nd our Senior Girls basketball team played their first tournament of the year at SAIT university. The girls started off the season against William Aberhart, and turned out to be a very exciting game. Despite having to work through some kinks and shake off some nerves, the girls played quite strongly. Sadly, the girls lost 82-61. The MVP of this game was Delaney Tateson. The second game against Olds was a strong victory for the Buffalos with a score of 62-28. This game was a real showcase all the hard work the girls put in during the last two weeks of practice and conditioning. The MVP of this game was Brittanie Bruder. The third game against Cochrane was a real nail biter, and left many audience members on the edge of their seats. In the end it was the girl’s patience on offense to let the play develop that gave them the lead, and then the win with a score of 72-61. The MVP of this game was Rachel Harvey. The Senior girls play their home opener on December 6th against Crescent Heights. LRP UPDATE
The Grade 12s went to BAPS and the food bank to volunteer. They wanted to help animals and people before the holiday season. The Grade 11s completed the Candy Cane Grams by planning and implementing it. They made posters, sold them, and delivered them. It was an awesome show of support. They also stepped up and helped the grade 10s with one of their projects and in total they raised $150 for Dialysis. The Grade 10s came up with the idea to do a Cookies for Kidneys bake sale for Dialysis. The kids baked, advertised, went on the radio and sold the cookies at the hospital. They raised $414 dollars for Dialysis and an anonymous donor matched what they raised so they ended up making $828 !!! The LRP students raised almost $1000 for Dialysis this month The LRP group went into the Santa Claus parade and had over 50 students show up. It was great to see the BCHS so well represented. As well, a Christmas party was hosted where a full turkey supper was served (thanks to Kathy Irwin and her friends). Over 90 teens attended. -Courtesy of Tia Argue and Denise Racz |
